Would you like to improve your maths skills? Perhaps you are looking to progress to further learning, an apprenticeship, or just build your confidence to apply mathematical thinking to solve problems successfully in the workplace, at home, and/or in other real-life situations. If you’d like to advance your maths skills and achieve a qualification to show off your skills, then our Maths for Life and Work course could be just what you’re looking for and help you achieve your goal.

You’ll start your learning by coming along to an informal support session, where you’ll meet one of our tutors, discuss what it is you want to achieve and do some skills checks, to help you to decide your next steps. Depending on the level of skills you currently have, this may involve spending more time in the support sessions to build your skills and confidence, or moving directly into the qualification course.

To support you to achieve your qualification, there is an expectation that you will complete a minimum of one hour of independent study per week, to ensure that you are ready for your assessments; your tutor will discuss this with you and ensure that you have the support you need to achieve your goals.

What will I learn?

You will be able to develop your skills in the three main aspects of maths:

  • Use and apply numbers in everyday situations, including whole numbers of any size, fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Use common measures and work out simple relationships between common units of measurements, to define quantities including money, time, weight, length, and capacity
  • Select, construct, and interpret a range of statistical diagrams, in various contexts, using tables, diagrams, charts, and graphs, to extract and interpret information.

What qualification will I get?

Depending upon the level of qualification that you study, you will receive a qualification in:

  • Level 1 - Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics (Level 1)
  • Level 2 - Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics (Level 2)

What is it like to learn with East Riding Adult Learning and Employability?

At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first phone call, right through to achieving your learning aims and beyond to ensure that you have the skills, knowledge and resources you need to reach your goals.

When you enrol on your maths course, your tutor will work with you to give you advice on the best ways to develop your maths skills and which level of qualification you should work towards. They will discuss with you all of the support we have available and together you will plan out your learning journey.

All of our Maths support sessions and functional skills courses take place in small, friendly and welcoming classes, where you will have the opportunity to take part in activities to practice your skills independently and as part of a group.

You’ll have regular 1-1 time with your tutor to discuss your progress and identify opportunities for further development. Your tutor will work with you to make sure that you always have the support you need to achieve your learning aim and to give you information about other opportunities you can access, whether this is developing your maths or digital skills or exploring options that are relevant to your wider goals. They’ll make you aware of other resources you can access, such as employability programmes to help you to get the job you want, or one of our other courses that will support your creativity, health or wellbeing.

What do I need to join the course?

You don’t need to have any previous experience of studying maths, but you must be committed to attending the sessions and achieving your qualification.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook, a pen, and a folder to keep your work together.

What could I do next?

When you’ve completed your learning, you will have the opportunity to discuss your next steps with our team. You might choose to continue improving your Maths by working towards the next level of qualification or moving on to a related subject, such as creative writing or poetry.

You might choose instead to develop your English or digital skills or to work towards a qualification in these areas. Please discuss options available with your tutor or follow the link below to explore our range of courses available at the Course Booking System from East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
