The Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is an ideal qualification for anyone wishing to work as a teaching assistant in a school. This course is aimed at those who would like to take up their first role in a school, as well as those already employed, but who do not yet have a qualification in supporting teaching and learning.

This qualification covers a range of essential skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a support role and to understand your role and responsibilities, such as child and young person development, safeguarding, communication, equality and diversity and supporting learning activities.

To enable you to demonstrate your learning you must be spend a minimum of ten hours per week in school, either in a paid or volunteer capacity.

What will I learn?

You’ll learn about the role and responsibilities of the teaching assistant and will have the opportunity to demonstrate and apply your learning in a school environment as part of your work placement.

You will complete 11 units of learning in total; there are 10 mandatory units, plus one optional unit.

During your 10 mandatory units you’ll learn about:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Schools as organisations.

You’ll also learn how to:

  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young people’s health and safety
  • Support children and young people’s positive behaviour
  • Support learning activities.

For your optional unit you can also focus on one of the following areas:

  • Prepare and maintain learning environments
  • Provide displays
  • Support children and young people at meal or snack times
  • Support children and young people with disabilities and special educational needs
  • Support children and young people’s play and leisure
  • Support assessment for learning.

What do I need to join the course?

You must have successfully completed the 5-week Introduction to supporting teaching and learning in schools course, be confident in the use of IT and be working at Level 2 in your English skills.

You will also require a minimum of 10 hours a week in a school in either a paid or voluntary capacity, together with a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen with you.

What could I do next?

Your tutor will work with you during your learning to support you in deciding your next steps. You may decide to work towards a qualification in English, maths or IT to support you with your future employment, or you may wish to consider further qualifications related to your work in schools, such as the Level 2 Certificate in Awareness of Bullying in Children and Young People or the Level 2 Certificate in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, both of which are available as an online eLearning package to study flexibly.
