Sewing machines are becoming more prevalent in the household as a useful tool for both practical and creative pursuits. Not only are they a time saving device when you need to mend something made from fabric, but they can also provide a well needed escape from the pressures of today’s busy lives. Mending, altering, and repairing clothing will save you money and reduce land fill waste- you’ll be able to convert garments to suit yourself and others, giving you a unique and thrifty wardrobe!

Getting to know how to use a sewing machine well and safely can open up a world of possibilities to the user that will eliminate much of the frustration that comes from not understanding how it works or how to get the most from it.

Through the course you’ll work with your tutor to create a series of samples that cover most of the basic techniques you’ll need to be able to tackle most sewing tasks with confidence and ease.

Suitable for beginners and those wishing to brush-up and refresh old skills.

What will I learn?

On the course you will learn:

  • how to set the machine up and work safely.
  • how to prepare fabric to sew a variety of seams and finishes.
  • how to use different attachments and settings to sew a range of techniques that you can use in a variety of projects. These include zips, buttonholes, piping etc.
  • build up a repertoire of samples to use for future reference when executing projects in a variety of disciplines such as dressmaking, soft furnishings, patchwork and quilting, craft, and other fabric ventures.
