Whether it’s a special occasion such as Valentine’s Day, or even if it's not, these cakes are a treat.
You will work with our tutor to make either a decorated Victoria sponge cake or individual, decorated cupcakes. You will follow the recipe, using weights and measures to work with the ingredients and temperatures, and timings to bake. This session aims to help increase your confidence with numbers, develop your cookery skills, and highlight possible progression to further learning opportunities.
As part of the session you will compare the cost of a homemade to shop bought cakes, look at the nutritional and calorific value of ingredients, and learn how to add your own, personal touches to your baking.
At the end of the session you can take your cake home and we will give you a recipe card and tips on presentation so that you can recreate the recipes.
On this course our tutor will guide you through the processes of preparing these recipes, giving you the confidence and skills needed to make them again. You will pick up some useful tips and tricks on how to present your dishes in the best way, and learn about the nutritional and cost benefits of home cooking. You’ll also learn about the ingredient ratios needed in common recipes. https://www.myrecipes.com/how-to/important-cooking-ratios - this will give you the basis for creating many dishes.
This free course is funded through Muiltiply.
At East Riding Adult Learning and Employability we pride ourselves on the support we give to our learners, from the very first time you contact us, to the day you achieve your goals.
If you choose to join this course you will be supported by our dedicated staff, learn in a small friendly and welcoming group, have the opportunity to take part in activities to practise your skills, be encouraged to continue to practise when you are away from the classroom and receive lots of encouragement to help you build both your skills and your confidence.
As well as working in groups, you will benefit from regular time working with your tutor, discussing your progress and planning your next steps. They will also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to including help with developing your skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.
Our team will be there to support you at every step of your journey and we always welcome your feedback to help us ensure that you feel safe, happy, supported and welcome.
Just an enthusiasm to learn - we will be looking particularly at the numeracy elements of cookery (weighing, estimating, etc.).
Please note that East Riding of Yorkshire Council is unable to guarantee a completely allergen free environment. If you would like more information prior to booking, please contact us.
We recommend that you bring an apron, suitable containers to take your cakes home in, and a notebook and pen.
When you’ve completed your learning, you will have the opportunity to discuss your next steps with our team. You might choose to improve your maths by working towards the next level of qualification or to move on to a related creative subject.
You might choose instead to develop your English or digital skills or to work towards a qualification in these areas. Alternatively, you may decide to learn about mental health, neurodiversity, or employability skills, or explore our wider course offer, which includes topics such as photography, arts and crafts, and mindfulness. Please discuss options available with your tutor or follow the link below to explore our range of courses available at the Course Booking System.
