Have you mastered the technical aspects of photography and are now hungry to delve deeper into specific genres? The Photography: Genre Mastery course takes you on a journey through the diverse world of photography, equipping you with the skills and knowledge to excel in various styles.

This comprehensive course is designed for photographers with a solid foundation who are ready to explore the techniques used in specific types of photography, such as portraiture, flash and landscape. Over 10 engaging hours, you'll explore the unique techniques, settings, and approaches used in popular photography genres. Through a mixture of theory, discussions, and practical exercises, you'll learn how to capture stunning images in landscapes, portraits, street photography and more.

What will I learn?

On this course, you will learn how to:

  • Identify the use of lenses for the correct application.
  • Learn how to enhance images using flash, fill-flash techniques and the use of reflectors and diffusers.
  • Understand the effects of focal lengths, distances and aperture upon your final image.
  • Understand how to rectify common issues such as ‘convergence’ ‘distortion’ and the effects of lens compression.
  • Photograph architecture correctly.
  • Apply various techniques such as Hyperfocal Distance, the Scheimpflug Principle and filters to enhance your landscape photography.
  • Confidently identify and utilise genre-specific techniques and settings to enhance your photography.
  • Apply your knowledge to capture distinctive and impactful images in various genres.
  • Develop a critical eye for analysing and improving your own photographic practice through constructive feedback and self-evaluation of your own work and the work of peers.

What do I need to join the course?

You should have a good understanding of how to use your camera to take photographs and adjust its settings to achieve different effects. Most importantly, you should bring enthusiasm and a willingness to develop your skills!

If you would like to build your confidence before joining this course, you could attend:

  • Photography: The Basics, to learn how to use your camera effectively and develop your core photography skills.
  • Photography: Camera Settings, to understand how to adjust your camera settings and take greater control of your images.
  • Photography: Creative Techniques, to explore the creative use of exposure, understand how different lenses affect an image and produce more visually striking photographs that support your photographic storytelling.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

Please bring your own camera with you. You might also find it useful to bring a notebook and pen.
