If you’d like to get started with writing poetry but are not quite sure where to begin, then this six-week course could be the ideal first step you’ve been looking for. You’ll have the opportunity to read a selection of poetry in a range of styles and learn a variety of techniques and methods for composing poetry in different formats to inspire you to put pen to paper and have a go at writing your own.

You’ll start with an introduction to poetry published by local East Riding poets and learn how to look for inspiration from all around you so you can gather ideas for your own poetry. You’ll then learn about some different forms of poetry and how you can use these to express yourself. Next, you’ll learn how to use a range of poetic devices, such as metaphor, simile and alliteration and then explore different ways to use rhyme and rhythm in your writing.

By the end of the course, you’ll have had the opportunity to experiment with using rhythm, rhyme and voice in different poetic styles to express your thoughts, feeling and ideas, so you can find out what works for you and have the knowledge and experience you need to continue writing poetry outside of the classroom.

What will I learn?

You will learn how to:

  • Search for inspiration and use this to form your ideas
  • Count and use syllables to form lines of poetry
  • Use voice and idiolect in your writing
  • Use poetic devices, such as metaphor, simile and alliteration
  • Include different styles of rhyme
  • Compose poetry that has rhythm.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

We recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen.

What could I do next?
