We use our digital devices for a range of daily tasks such as communicating with loved ones, sharing information online, or even emailing potential employers. With all this online activity, it can sometimes be difficult to spot what’s a scam and what’s real! That’s where our course, Recognising Scams and Associated Risks, comes in to teach you the basics of spotting fraudulent schemes and scams before they spot you. With your tutor, you will explore classic scams as well as the latest cyber tricks and most importantly you will equip yourself with the knowledge to not only recognise a scam, but also how to confidently report them. Come along and join us for this short 2-hour course and become a savvy defender against digital deception!

What will I learn?

On this course, you will learn:

  • What is a scam and which devices we can come across scams.
  • Different types of scams.
  • Tips and tricks for identifying scams to help keep yourself safe.
  • How to report a scam and where to find support.

This course is funded through Tailored Learning with the purpose of improving your essential digital skills. The cost is visible at the top of the page. Concessions may be available dependent on circumstances.

What do I need to join the course?

A willingness to learn and a positive attitude! You do not need any prior knowledge in this area to attend, however you might benefit from having some understanding of the internet, using emails and communicating online as we will discuss scams related to these areas. If you would like to find out more about these first, talk to one of our friendly members of staff about the range of Computer/Smartphone and Tablet courses that we offer to help you brush up on the basics.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

You might find it helpful to bring a notebook and pen to make some notes to help with your learning.

Virtual Learning Only: If you are attending virtually, you will need to make sure you have a suitable PC/laptop to allow you to join the virtual group with your tutor. You will be sent a link to Microsoft Teams, which can be accessed through the web browser, so you will require a stable internet connection to join the course.

As a next step, you could choose to learn about managing files and folders on a computer, or even managing your emails on a computer, smartphone or tablet.
