Sewing can be an expensive hobby, but you can also sew to save money. Mending, refashioning, upcycling, and using fabric from charity shops helps a lot.
You can use sheets, curtains, tablecloths, etc. and upcycle them into garments, bags, etc.
You can use a modern electric sewing machine to create all sorts of incredible garments and furnishings, with beautiful embellishments and decorative stitches. But before you can learn all that it’s vital to start at the beginning, with the very basics.
That’s why we’ve created this short free taster course to get you started. It’s perfect if you’d like to try one of our more advanced sewing courses but have no experience – or if you have a machine at home that’s gathering dust because you don’t know what to do with it.
You’ll learn what all the different parts of a sewing machine are for, and what you need to do with them – like threading the needle, filling the bobbin, and adjusting tension.
We can’t promise you’ll be sewing like a pro by the end of the session – but you’ll have a great knowledge foundation to build on!

As well as working in groups, you will benefit from regular time working with your tutor, discussing your progress and planning your next steps. They will also tell you about all of the other great opportunities that you have access to including help with developing your skills, joining one of our creative skills classes or sessions to improve your health, wellbeing, confidence or resilience. If you are looking for work or aiming for a change of role, then your tutor will also make you aware of the employability programmes we have available to support you in achieving your employment goals.

You don’t need to bring anything - we will supply all resources.
