Are you interested in working or volunteering in schools as a teaching assistant so you can inspire and support children and young people to learn? If so, then this five-week course is an essential starting point for the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification.

This Intro course is designed to give you an insight into the different roles available in schools, as well as the skills and knowledge you’ll need to achieve your qualification and to take up a career in supporting teaching and learning in schools.

What will I learn?

You’ll learn about the role of the teaching assistant in schools and be introduced to the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification. You’ll gain an understanding of the skills and knowledge you will need for both further study and work within a school environment.

On this course you will:

  • Learn about the Teaching Assistant role and what this involves on a day-to-day basis
  • Gain an understanding of the Level 2 course criteria and content
  • Learn how to write reflective accounts and statements of knowledge to record and consolidate your learning
  • Write a personal development plan to identify your areas for further development
  • Decide what your next step will be.

What do I need to join the course?

You do not need to have a school placement or disclosure and barring service (DBS) check in place to enrol on the Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course, but you should have already spoken to one of our advisors to receive information, advice and guidance about your learning journey. If you haven’t had an appointment yet, please contact us and a member of staff will be happy to help you.

What do I need to provide for the first session?

This course is delivered via virtual learning. You will not need to attend any physical delivery but you will need to commit to attending the remote session at the specified date and time. In order to participate in virtual sessions, you will need access to the following:

  • Computer/Laptop/Smartphone/Tablet
  • Headset/earphones, including a microphone (unless you are able to work in an area where you will not be disturbed / disturb others)
  • A reliable internet connection
  • An email address to access the virtual classroom
  • A means of using video conferencing e.g. integrated webcam, webcam, smart phone/tablet with camera
  • Teams app downloaded (a free download is available)

What could I do next?

Your tutor will work with you during this Introduction to Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course to help you to complete a personal development plan and to decide your next steps.

If you’re ready to move on to the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools qualification, then your tutor will work with you to make sure you have your next steps in place and provide you with advice on securing the necessary school placement and DBS check.

Alternatively, you may decide to brush up your English, maths or digital skills before progressing to your qualification study, in which case your tutor will signpost you back to your advisor to discuss what your options are and to help you decide on what your next step should be.
