Course details

Strong mathematics skills can open many opportunities, whether you are looking to progress in your career, return to education, or feel more confident managing everyday tasks. If you are ready to improve your maths in a way that fits your lifestyle, we are here to support you every step of the way. You are not alone, as nearly half of working-age adults in England have mathematics skills below secondary school level. Now is an ideal time to take that first step.

We offer a range of nationally recognised Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications, from Entry Level through to Level 2, which is equivalent to a pass at GCSE. Don’t worry if you’re not sure which level you should work towards; you’ll start your learning by attending a short introductory programme called ‘Getting Ready for Maths’ which will help you to get started. During these initial sessions, you will meet with a Learner Experience Advisor and one of our maths tutors who will help you identify your current level, understand your strengths, and choose the most suitable course based on your goals and previous experience.

Our courses focus on practical, everyday mathematics, including working with numbers and measurements, understanding shapes and space, and interpreting data and statistics. You will develop problem-solving skills, learn how to apply appropriate strategies, and gain confidence in checking and organising your results. With flexible learning options available both in person and online, you can choose the environment that works best for you.

Our maths courses are available in all of our Adult Learning Centres and offer flexible start dates. Apply now and begin your journey to better maths skills for life, work, and everything in between.

What do I need to join the course?

Our maths courses are aimed at adults who do not have a Level 2 qualification in maths (GCSE grade C / grade 4 or above). If you’ve achieved a maths qualification in the past and feel that you have a significant gap in your maths skills and knowledge, please get in touch with us to discuss how we could help.

Whether you’re starting from the basics or are looking to gain a qualification to help you in life and work, our courses provide a supportive and flexible learning environment to help you reach your goals.

What do I need to bring with me to the first session?

You should bring with you evidence of your identity (a passport, driving licence or birth certificate) and any qualification certificates you already have.

What can I expect from 'Getting Ready For Maths'?

When you apply for one of our mathematics courses, your journey will begin with our welcoming and supportive 'Getting Ready for Maths' programme. These initial sessions are your opportunity to meet with a friendly advisor who will take the time to understand your goals and why improving your maths is important to you.

You will also work with a qualified maths tutor to complete some skills checks; these are not tests, but a helpful way to identify your current level, recognise your strengths and highlight areas where you may benefit from further support. This process ensures that you are placed on the course that best matches your needs and aspirations.

As part of your course, you will find out what it’s like to learn with us; you’ll find out what you can expect from your learning experience, how we prioritise your safety and wellbeing and about our commitment to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion, as well as the British values that shape our learning environment.
