What are you doing to keep learners safe?

The safety of our learners and staff is our top priority and we’ve made some big changes to our centres, from socially-distanced training rooms to staggered start times. If you choose to attend one of our classrooms in a centre then things will look different, but our staff will be as friendly and helpful as ever and are really excited to welcome learners back. Of course, if you choose to attend our virtual classroom from home, then that is fine too. Our staff and tutors have been really busy over the last few months ensuring that we can provide you will the same quality of teaching and learning virtually as we do in the classroom

If you’re concerned about visiting one of our centres, please get in touch so we can discuss it with you.

What do I need to join the course?

No prior qualifications are needed. We can cater for learners with no ICT qualifications at all, right up to those who just need a little help to get their Level 2 (GCSE grade 4/C or above) qualification in ICT. Once we receive your application, we will give you a call and arrange for you to speak to one of our advisors (this can be done over the telephone, via video call or face to face, whichever suits you best). This will help you to ensure that you start learning on the right level, at the right time and in the right type of learning for you.

What do I need to bring with me to the first meeting?

If your meeting is to take place in one of our centres, please bring along a notebook and pen. We are following safety guidelines so, at the moment, we are unable to provide these for you. You should also bring with you evidence of your identity (a passport, driving licence or birth certificate) and any qualification certificates you have. If your meeting is taking place online as a video call or on the telephone, it is also useful to have a notebook and pen to hand.

What will happen at the first meeting?

You will be supported by an experienced advisor who will talk to you about what you want to achieve and why. It may be that you are looking to gain more ICT skills to support your children at school, to gain qualifications to help you find work or to give you more confidence when using ICT in everyday life. Whatever your reason to learn, we have a course option to suit you.

You’ll also complete some initial skills assessments, to find out what level you are currently working at, what you are already good at and what you need to practice or learn. You’ll also discuss whether you would prefer to learn in one of our centres or virtually at home. Your advisor will then be able to help you to choose the right course and type of learning for you.

What qualification will I get when I join a course?

It depends on the course. Your advisor will take you through the different options, which include nationally recognised qualifications and certificates issued by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

What will happen after I decide on a course?

Your advisor will give you further information about your chosen course and confirm the start date and time. We will also talk to you about what to expect on your first day of learning and ask you to read a short induction about what learning with us – virtually or at one of our Adult Learning Centres - is like. This will cover what we do to keep you safe during your time with us. It will also include fundamental British values and equality and diversity, and how these affect you as a learner.

Your advisor will keep in touch with you during your learning to offer support and to ask for your feedback to help us to improve.
