Course details

Good basic English skills are essential for most jobs, for study in other subjects and for everyday life and work situations. If you’d like to improve your English skills in a way that works for you, read below to find out how we can help.

We deliver a range of nationally recognised English Functional Skills qualifications, starting with the basics and going right up to Level 2, which is equivalent to a pass at GCSE. Don’t worry if you’re not sure which level you should work towards; before you start, you’ll be invited to an appointment with one of our friendly advisors, who will discuss with you what you’d like to learn, what your goals are and whether you already have any qualifications in English, so you can be sure that you can join the course at a level that’s right for you.

For all levels of English, you’ll be supported to develop your reading, writing and speaking and listening skills, focusing on topics that are relevant to everyday life.

Our English courses are available in all of our centres and online too, so you can choose whether you’d like to join us in the classroom or to log in from home and learn virtually. There’s no time like the present, so take the first step and apply today.

What do I need to join the course?

The courses are aimed at learners who do not have a Level 2 qualification in English (GCSE grade C / grade 4 or above). When you apply for this course, we will call you and offer you an appointment with an advisor to discuss what it is you’d like to learn; you can choose whether you’d like to attend an appointment in centre, over the telephone or via Microsoft Teams video call, whichever suits you best.

What do I need to bring with me to the first meeting?

You should bring with you evidence of your identity (a passport, driving licence or birth certificate) and any qualification certificates you already have.

What will happen at the first meeting?

You will meet with one of our friendly advisors who will talk to you about what you want to achieve and why this is important to you.

During your appointment you’ll complete some skill checks to find out what level of English you’re currently working at, as well as what it is that you are already good at and what you need to practice or learn. Your advisor will then be able to help you to choose the right course for you.

What qualification will I get when I complete a course?

You can work towards a nationally recognised Functional Skills qualification at different levels, as well as certificates issued by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

What will happen after I decide on a course?

Your advisor will give you more information about your chosen course and confirm a start date and time with you. We will also talk to you about what to expect on your first day of learning and ask you to read a short induction about what it’s like to learn with us. This will explain what we do to keep you safe during your time with us and give you an understanding of the fundamental British values we abide by and how we promote equality and diversity in our learning environments.

Your advisor will keep in touch with you during your learning to offer support and to make sure you always have the opportunity to give us feedback about your experience.

Can we help you to learn?

You can find more information on the Financial help and additional support page or you can contact us to discuss this, as well as any other support we can provide.
